Overview

The A-B-C building block approach allows you to choose a solution that meets your business continuity requirements:

Option A provides incremental imaging of servers and critical PCs to local storage on your own network (such as a NAS or USB hard drive). In the event of a failure, the image can be restored to a “bare metal” server - even different hardware– or converted to run on VMWare. Incremental imaging can take place daily, weekly or even several times a day to meet your needs.

Option B builds on option A, providing you with secure off-site storage of your images and data, and ensuring that your backups are protected and accessible even if there is a total loss of your on-site systems. Your server/PC images are replicated to storage servers in our secure data centres.

Option C completes the solution by providing a Live Standby Server for rapid business recovery. If your on-site infrastructure suffers a “disaster” the standby server can be up and running in a few minutes with your most recent off-site data backup.  Additional replication features provide frequent replication of critical data from your on-site server to the Live Standby Server, maintaining the standby server data as close to real time as practical. Key users can connect to the Live Standby Server using remote access software.

Frequently Asked Questions
  • How often is my data backed up?
The schedule can be set as frequently as practical, and each option can have its own schedule. For Option A on servers, full imaging is normally done once per week with incremental images every night. Dynamic data, such as email and databases can be backed up hourly so that your local backup is never more than 1 hour old.
  • How much internet bandwidth do I need for Option B?
This is always a difficult question to answer. Basically, if you want to replicate data off-site at weekend, then an ADSL connection might suffice. If you want to replicate nightly then we would recommend a basic SDSL connection, and for hourly off-site replication you will need a non-contended (1:1) SDSL connection.

  • What happens if I suffer a disaster?
The response will depend on the exact nature of your disaster and which options you have in place. If you have a full ABC solution our helpdesk would respond to your disaster by a) ensuring the latest images and data are installed onto the Live Standbys, and then make additional changes to ensure email is delivered to the Live Standby infrastructure. We will rehearse this procedure with you to confirm that your SABC solution is correctly configured.
  • How do I access the Live Standby Server / PC
The Live Standby infrastructure is accessible by remote access software. You will be able to access it from any internet connected Windows PC.
  • How do I go back to using my own servers, etc. after a disaster?
Our helpdesk will reverse the process. Images and data will be taken from the Live Standbys infrastructure, copied (or couriered on disk) to your site and restored onto your repaired or replaced servers. Email and other internet services will then be switched back to your own infrastructure.
